A couple of different moms have asked what I do for my baby’s owies and teething issues. As an acupuncturist (with a chiropractor for a husband), I have a lot of tools that most moms don’t have at home. But here are my top three go-tos that are pretty accessible to most new moms.
Camilia Teething Drops: My baby has always loved to take these. The first time I gave them, my husband asked if they were a sedative. Within 15 minutes the crying not only stopped, but my baby was resting peacefully. They don’t always put my baby to sleep, but they always seem to be comforting.
Yunnan Baiyao: This is an amazing (and secret) mix of Chinese herbs. I use the powder. For adults, it can be taken internally and externally to stop bleeding and the little red pill that is included is powerful enough to stop shock or bleeding out in the case of serious injuries. (In that case, 911 is a good idea too. I pray we never have need for either.) There is not a dosage for infants, but I feel comfortable putting a little on my baby as needed. It can be mixed with water (or traditionally, spit) to make a paste and then put on an open wound. I mix it with breastmilk for my baby. I’ve also poured the powder directly on a bleeding wound to stop the bleeding.
Mommy Milk: This is my favorite! Most everyone knows that mommy milk is comforting, especially if a baby has just gotten an owie or is not feeling good. But I use it internally and externally as a medicine for my baby - it’s that powerful! Breastfeeding creates endorphins in the body that make my baby feel good and also serve to relieve pain. Mommy milk itself has amazing immune components. So, if my baby is sick I breastfeed a lot to help speed recovery and to comfort. If my baby gets an owie, I rub a little mommy milk on it to help it heal faster and breastfeed to soothe the pain.
I hope that helps! Best wishes on your journey!
