I have a baby whom I love and who loves me. I am not only a mommy, but I am my baby’s first playmate and best friend. When my little one is tired, or otherwise off, I provide comfort and stability. When my baby is energetic, I provide companionship. When my baby does something new, I get to see eyes full of pride because I am the one that my baby searches for in those moments. Every so often, we also have Daddy to ourselves for a couple of days at a time - which is even more fun! But I am still the one my baby wants and needs to be close to.
It’s a beautiful relationship and we could spend our days playing and growing and just being together. But, unfortunately, there is a real world outside of our bubble that sometimes has to be attended to. Things like mopping and bathroom scrubbing need to be done and it’s best if my baby sits those activities out. So what’s a mommy to do?
Have a cleaning playdate, of course!
This idea came to me when I was totally frustrated by the state of my home. I just wanted someone to come in and do it all for me so I didn’t have to think about it. But, that wasn’t sustainable long-term and there was no sense in paying someone to clean my home once, just for it to get messy again in a week. So I thought, I’ll invite another mom and baby over. She can play with the babies while I clean and I can do the same for her on another day.
It seems to be working! A few weeks in and my house is feeling a lot lighter and more relaxing and my baby is getting used to playing with other people when I’m not in the room. We’re both growing!
This excellent idea serves three purposes. First, it give my baby the opportunity to play with other babies while being able to get to Mommy as needed (while also getting used to Mommy not being within touching distance). Second, it gives me the opportunity to get some housework done. And, I realized just now, that a third benefit is that I get the opportunity to create closer friendships with some of the other women in the mom group.
Everyone wins! And I have a clean house!
Thanks to those moms who are participating in this experiment with me! Best wishes to those who want to take this idea and start their own cleaning playdate group!
